Today we participated in our first couples race together in Central Park! It was a run/bike/run relay race where one person runs and the other person bikes. We spent a few weeks leading up to the race having workout dates to prepare. Working out is so much more fun when you have good company.
Our race time was 55:23 and overall placed 26th out of 67 couples. Super fun! Good teamwork. We plan on signing up again next year where the third leg of the race is actually supposed to be in a rowboat. (This year was an unusual year where the race organizers had to cancel the rowboat portion due to construction on the boat dock.) The race route this year started with a 1 mile run, followed by a 12 mile bike ride (which is 2 outer loops around Central Park), and a 1 mile run to the finish line.
Spend More Time Together
We are always trying to come up with different ways to incorporate fitness into our everyday lives. It’s not always easy but being and staying active is a conscious lifestyle decision of ours. The more you do it the easier it becomes. The race gave us even more reason to spend quality time together.
Stay Motivated
Find a partner or friend with similar interests and you’ll find it much easier to stay motivated while you train. It also applies to race day. Race registration opened at 6:15 am. Factor in a shower, breakfast, a little time to digest, we’re talking super early morning – at least for us. Both team members had to be present to sign in. We used the distance towards registration as our warm up jog/bike. Special thanks to our friend Doug for also waking up early to join us. (More motivation!)
You’ll Have Fun Stories to Share
We were so looking forward to the rowboat portion of this race that we got a GoPro. It was a bummer to learn that part wasn’t going to happen. You can see Andrey on his bike and how we wore the GoPro with the body strap. It slowed our race time down by 1 minute and 30 seconds (and about 10 spots overall) during our two transitions. We knew the act of unbuckling and switching the camera back and forth would cost us some time but it was worth it. We wanted to document the silliness.
After the race, and a savory breakfast crepe or two later, we relaxed on the couch and re-lived the race footage together. It was fun for us to watch. Lucky for you, we edited it. But if you ever get a chance to sign up for a race with a friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or running partner – we recommend it.
Set a goal. Get motivated. You can do it!
